Dual Honours for Riverview’s Coach Peter!

Submitted by Mark Garrett

2013-2014 was a great year for Riverview basketball! Peter Robinson-Stovel, coach of the U11 boys “Riverview Stars”, was named the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association’s “2013-2014 Coach of the Year”. The award was given in recognition of Peter’s dedication to his team, his commitment to fair play, and for his service as a model for other coaches to emulate. Twelve WMBA coaches were nominated for the award. To crown a great season, Peter’s team won the WMBA Spring League Community Club “11 Boys West 2014 City Champion” title in a

thrilling final against Tuxedo at Linden Woods Community Centre on June 21.

Peter began coaching the Riverview boys’ basketball team over 15 years ago when his eldest son started playing at 5 years of age. He continued as coach through his middle son’s years, and is now coaching his youngest son’s team. Our community is very fortunate to have had Coach Peter contributing to our children’s development as basketball players and as young people over these many years. Congratulations, Peter, and thank you!

2014-2015 Winter Basketball

General League Information

Riverview Community Centre (RVCC) basketball teams will be playing in the Community Club Basketball league (Club Basketball) being offered by the WMBA. The WMBA also offers a Rising Stars League. Rising Stars athletes may not play on a WMBA Community Club team during the same season. Players are only allowed to play on one WMBA team at a time.

The WMBA is a not-for-profit community club based basketball league located in Winnipeg.  The WMBA has a website (www.wmba.ca) which contains a wide variety of information about the season and the program.

Community Club Basketball Information

The winter league is open to boys and girls ages 4 - 18. The maximum number of players per team, under WMBA rules, is 12. Players are strongly encouraged to register as soon as possible, in order to ensure a spot on a team .

Once registration is over, teams will be formed, coaches confirmed, and practice times coordinated with each coach. Players will be contacted by the coach, who will inform them of practice times and location.

We are hoping to get enough 8 & 9 year old girls registered to form a Riverview team – we have a coach and a gym, now we need girls!

If there is enough interest, there is also gym space available for 3 on 3 adult basketball. Apparently, adult basketball has happened in our neighbourhood in the past and there is gym space now to revive it. The cost will be determined at a later date.

Game Days & Age Divisions

Ages 4 to 12 play on Saturdays, ages 13 to 18 on Sundays. Games are played between 9 am and 6 pm. Games are one hour in length.

Other Program Information

The fall/winter league will run from mid-October to early March. Teams will practice once per week, on a weeknight. Teams could be based out of Riverview, Earl Grey, Valour, or a team in St. Vital.

Practice times will not be available until the coaches and gym times have been assigned.  Practice times range from Monday to Thursday, 6:00 - 10:00 pm.

Coaches and volunteers are always needed to help with the program.  Each team requires a volunteer coach, and if possible an assistant coach and manager, before the team will be registered with the WMBA.  Any parent willing to volunteer should do so when registering their child in the program.

Participants need to wear runners with non-marking soles and shorts with no pockets or belt loops.  One jersey will be supplied by RVCC for the duration of the season.  This jersey needs to be returned to the coach at the windup after the last game of the season.  There is a fee for non-returned jerseys (for example, $40 for RVCC teams, $50 for Norberry CC teams).

Fee: Cost of registering a team with the WMBA is $1,700 per team for ages 8 to 18, and $850 per team for ages 4 to 7; the RVCC basketball fee assumes 8 players per team

$110 for ages 4 - 7

$220 for ages 8 – 18

Refunds will be provided if a player chooses to withdraw from the program prior to the first game of the season. All refunds are subject to a $25 administration fee, which is deducted from the registration fee amount. To obtain a refund, email notification must be given to the Riverview basketball convener at least 48 hours to the start of the first game of the season. There are no refunds after the first game of the season!

Late Registrations

In the event that you miss on-line registration, you must contact the RVCC office who will put you in touch with the convenor.  At that time, the convenor will determine if there is room on a team for your child.  If your child is accepted, you will be requested to complete a registration form and pay the registration fee.  In addition, there will be a $50 late registration fee required prior to your child being placed on a team.

Hockey & Skiing

Schedules for pleasure skating will be posted in the Hall.

Jackrabbit Hockey

Cost is 60.00 for the season.
Begins when the ice at RVCC is ready for use and practices are Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings.
The goal is to have fun while learning basic hockey skills in a casual environment.  It helps if the players have basic skating skills, but all are welcome to join.  It is recommended that skating lessons be taken in the fall to increase confidence on the ice for the Jackrabbit season.  Skating skills and basic passing and puck handling are practiced and there is a short game to end the session.  Parents are welcome and encouraged to come out on the ice to help out.

A helmet and cage are mandatory.  It is strongly recommended that shin pads, elbow pads and hockey gloves are worn.  Most players also wear hockey pants, but this is not required.

Youth Hockey is registered and delivered through the

Fort Garry North Hockey Association
