Quinn Menec -
Volunteer of the Year
There are many types of people and skills that contribute to building and
maintaining a healthy Community Centre - coaches, convenors, workers and
organizers just to name a few. Quinn Menec burst on to the Riverview
Community Centre scene in 2001, wishing to get involved and has made his
mark as a leader and organizer since then.
Quinn eagerly took on the duties of Vice President at that time. He
immediately became responsible for the always sensitive Personnel Committe
and became an alternate rep. to the City Centre Community Club Board. He
was also on line for the ever favourite alarm calls and the more pleasant
compliments and complaints. Quinn always handled these duties in the
respectful, conscientious and orderly fashion that has characterized all
his endeavours.
Quinn assumed the Presidency in 2003 where his organizational abilites
were displayed in our Club operations as well as at the Greater Council of
Winnipeg Community Centres Board. In the interim Quinn was involved in the
Jack Rabbits Hockey Program as a Treasurer, with the Annual Spider Mazur
4X4 Hockey Tournament, and as the start up Convenor for both Mini
Volleyball and Karate Programs at our club. Currently, Quinn has earned
the title of Past President assisting the current executive in the day to
day operations of the Club. He is also active as a Fund Drive Canvasser
and is filling the newly created role of Grant Coordinator to seek out and
secure Grants to start up programs, supply needed equipment, and support
building renovations.
Aside from the Community Club, Qiunn has volunteered for the United Way
serving as a loaned representative in 2001, as a fund raiser for the South
Osbourne Nursery School and for the Osborne St. Railway Underpass
Beautification project.
Quinn balances, or at least juggles, all of this with a career and family
including 4 young sons (Michelle, his wife, deserves a lot of this credit
as well)! Amazingly Quinn believes that there is more that he can do for
our Community Centre especially if it means enhancing the lives and
opportunities of the kids and families we serve.
Your chance to volunteer
The Community Centre provides programs, recreation and green space that
benefits all of us. Of course, the Community Centre needs funds to
continue operating every year. Every year, one of the most important
sources of those funds is door-to-door canvassing asking local residents
for donations. If you know of anyone who would be willing to canvass one of
the following routes, please have them call former Volunteer of the Year
Lori Keith at 452-0082 (home) or e-mail her at

Hydro pilot project in
Riverview
Manitoba Hydro is partnering with Natural Resources Canada and Info Energy
to launch a year long Smart Meter Pay-As-You-Go pilot project in five
Manitoba communities. The project will allow homeowners to observe their
real time consumption of electricity in dollars and cents using a special
meter, and make convenient and flexible payments for their energy.
Riverview has been selected as one of the five pilot communities, and
homeowners participating in the program will be provided with free
equipment, installation, and support.
Any Riverview resident interested in energy conservation and saving money
is welcome to register to be one of the 60 neighbourhood homes to be part
of this project. These meters are in use in other jurisdictions around the
world including Woodstock, Ontario, where residents have been using
Pay-As-You-Go smart meters since 1989 with great success. This project
will allow Manitoba Hydro to determine if the positive benefits seen in
Woodstock can also be realized in Manitoba.
Benefits observed in other Pay-As-You-Go smart meter programs include:
average electricity savings of more than 16 percent; reductions in
greenhouse gas emissions, the ability to determine actual costs associated
with behaviours and appliances in the home; and increased consumer
awareness. Normal monthly billing doesnt offer as clear a picture of a
homes specific electricity consumption patterns, making it more difficult
to reduce or change those patterns. Because the smart meter offers instant
feedback, it is an ideal tool for monitoring home electricity consumption.
If you leave a light on youll see how much that choice costs you.
If you would like to learn more about, or be part of, the Smart Meter
Pay-As-You-Go pilot project in Riverview you can contact me, Dennis
Cunningham at 452-6229 or
d.e.cunningham@shaw.ca. Manitoba Hydro will be scheduling a Riverview
information session on the project on the evening of April 28th at
Riverview Elementary School.
Please share this note with any other Riverview resident you think might
be interested in the program. To date 16 homeowners have signed up.
