15th Annual 4 on 4 Classic Hockey Tournament

February 8 & 9, 2008

February 9th was Hockey Day in Canada and we did our part to celebrate it.  The Annual 4 on 4 Hockey Tournament was once again a huge success despite the extremely cold weather on Saturday.     There were 10 teams registered in the over 35 division and 4 teams in the Open (Under 35) division.  All games went ahead as scheduled with the Merry Little Men coming out on top in the 35 & over division.  The Handsome Devils won the Open division (under 35).

This year we named an Over 50 All Star Team.   A player was picked from each team who was 50 +.  The All Star Team was:  Craig Brown, Guido Cerasani, Don Knight, Kevin Prokosh, Silvio Marinelli and Bob Holder. Next year, we are hoping to add a 50+ division to our event.

The Pat Colpitts “Golden Skate” award for “Dedication & Enthusiasm” for the tournament went to Guido Cerasani.

The organizing committee would like to thank and recognize a few key people who managed to perform their tasks in extremely cold conditions.

Ice Preparation and maintenance:

Ted Bigelow, Dave Kressock, Guido Cerasani, Rob

Referees and Timekeepers:

Vico Fabbri, Virgie Fabbri, Jock Rodgers, Dave Taylor, Bob Kulczycki, and Charlie Scerbo.

As well, we had great food during the weekend as Colin, Wendy, John, Zach and Tia Nicolson prepared hamburgers, hot dogs and McNic’s (breakfast) for the weekend.

We also would like to thank the many volunteers who helped out in the bar or sitting at the door for the social (Cheynne Keith, Heather Patrick, Angela Hilland, Lisa Sinnicks, Pat Fedirchuk, Ian Ledger, Philippe Champagne, Pam McWilliams, Dan Jackson, Karl Carp, Quinn Menec, and probably more that I have missed).  We would really like to thank all the people who just stepped in at the last minute and helped when we needed them.

We would also like to thank Val Weide, Deb Anderson, Guido Cerasani, and Dave Kressock for promoting and selling social tickets prior to the event.

We would like to thank the staff at Riverview who manned the canteen and helped out when asked.  (Rob – ice, Nadine – cleaning, Jesse, Dana, Nico – canteen, Jerry & Judy – bartenders)

The sponsors of this event deserve a big thank you.  Without them, it would not be the financial success that it has become.  We made approximately $4000 this year.  At the time of the writing of this article, the final numbers were not in yet.    We have many sponsors that provide support to our event in many ways, either financially or in kind.  Please remember to thank them when you see them and also to support them.

I would like to thank the organizing committee for the work they did for this tournament.  We start with a few items in November such as booking the band and starting the advertising but the real work begins in January.  Our committee consists of:  Craig Brown (scheduling and team registration), Roger Burns (sponsors and prizes for tournament), Aron Brown (under 35 team recruitment and set up), Guido Cerasani, Dave Kressock, and Dave McWilliams (ice preparation, ticket selling, promotion, and anything else that was asked of them) and myself, Lori Keith.  We manage to organize this event with very few meetings and lots of e-mails, but it is easy when everyone does their part so well.

Lastly, we would like to thank all the players who participated in the event and to the community for supporting the social.  It was a great event with lots of enthusiasm, excitement and good sportsmanship.
