WINTER SPORTS REGISTRATION
Register your child for hockey, basketball and indoor soccer at Riverview Community Centre (
90 Ashland Ave.), this Wednesday evening, Aug. 29 or next Wednesday evening, Sept. 5, between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m., or Saturday Sept. 8, between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. also at Riverview Community Centre.

JACK RABBITS HOCKEY – COACHES NEEDED
Jackrabbits hockey is the least expensive way to introduce any child to hockey, and maybe the most fun. It is held at the Riverview Community Centre outdoor rink twice a week, for an hour each time. Kids are grouped by ages, generally 4 years to 7, and 8 to 10. It is really intended for kids who are not registered in a more formal hockey program. It has been a great success over the years, but like all good things, without volunteers it does not happen. Our community needs Jackrabbits hockey coaches for the upcoming season. Trevor Gardner has done it for the past few years but not this year. If you have any questions or prospective coaches want to get a hold of Trev, you can call him at 284-1058.

FALL PROGRAMS
The Riverview Community Centre has been running drop in programs over the summer for children in the neighbourhood. We intend to continue the programs in evenings and weekends in the Fall, Winter and Spring.  Watch for the program  schedule on the bulletin board at the club, in the Bugle (email reflector@riverviewcc.ca to be a subscriber for regular updates). or on the website at www.riverviewcc.ca

NEW! NEW! NEW! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY FOR KIDS!

ATTENTION ALL GARDENERS
Long time Riverview residents Cathy and Ken Land have just purchased (with a partner) St. Mary's Nursery & Garden Centre Ltd @ 2901 St. Mary's Road. Since there are so many Riverview residents who take pride in their gardens, maybe they want to support a fellow Riverview resident (and former Community Centre President and volunteer) when purchasing their next plant, tree, prairie grass etc....

PLEASE BAND YOUR TREES!
A resident wrote in: The September long weekend is the time to band our trees. The more that are banded, the better the protection. As you can see, Winnipeg School Division is doing its bit by having trees on school property as well as adjacent boulevards banded. However, according to Mike Allen, former City of Winnipeg Forester and current consulting urban forester, cankerworms also migrate from one tree to another via their crown. So if a banded tree's branches touch those of an unbanded tree, the tree is still at risk.

RIVERVIEW ATHLETES EXCEL AT WESTERN CANADA SUMMER GAMES
Manitoba’s Canoe & Kayak Team had an outstanding regatta at the Western Canada Summer Games, held in Edmonton from August 5th to 11th. The team was led by Riverview’s own Tom Sherwin, who won 6 Gold and 4 Silver Medals, and was named the Province’s Flagbearer at the closing ceremonies of the Games, in recognition of his achievements. Fifteen year old Tom is a student at Churchill High School and began canoeing at the Canoe & Kayak Centre on Churchill Drive when he was twelve. Emily Brigham, Jayne & Lena Shepherd, Ian Ellis, Riley McMurray, and Baileigh Sirman also did Riverview & Churchill proud by bringing home multiple medals and helping the Team to its best ever Games performance with a total of 28 medals. Riverview resident and Provincial Coach Jerome Seremak captained the Team and predicts a bright future for Tom and his team-mates. Anyone interested in getting involved in canoeing or kayaking is ! encouraged to contact the Centre at 80 Churchill Drive by phoning 284-4646.

Riverview was also well represented in other sports, with Andrew Harrison winning Bronze in Men’s Badminton, Brayden Jackson bringing home Bronze in Men’s Rugby, Sean Clarke helping his Men’s Baseball Team to a 4th place finish, Rachel Rathbone placing 4th in Women’s soccer, and Alice Sherwin placing 5th in the 5000m event in Track & Field. The entire Team Manitoba effort was led by Riverview’s own
Ted Bigelow, the Chef de Mission for Team Toba, who saw the team to a 3rd place overall finish against the Western Provinces & Territories. Way to go Riverview!
