EarthShare Agricultural Co-op is the longest-running and largest community-supported, agricultural co-operative in Manitoba. Begun in 1989 by the Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council, the Co-op has grown from a few Central American refugees growing vegetables for their families to an organization that grows and delivers organic vegetables to over 250 members across Winnipeg. Members of the Co-op pay a one-time only membership fee of $10 plus $140 for a single portion, or $260 for a double portion of the vegetables grown each year. Members are responsible for contributing at least one day of labour on the farm or to the administration of the Co-op. In return, members receive a minimum of 12 weekly deliveries of delicious fresh vegetables throughout the growing season (late June to September) to one of the Co-op’s eight convenient distribution points throughout Winnipeg, including Fort Whyte Centre.

EarthShare Organic Farms will begin planting 14 acres of organic vegetables in April just north of the Bison Prairie. A partnership between EarthShare Agricultural Co-op, Fort Whyte Centre, and Growing Prospects, this social enterprise will provide a site for education and research programs on sustainable agricultural practices, enhance local food security, provide training and employment for new Canadians and disadvantaged youth, and generate revenue to support the sustainable community goals of the three partnering organizations.
